Professor Lu Cewo from the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University dedicates himself to artificial intelligence research. He leads a team that has achieved internationally advanced results in robotics and AI frameworks. As he states: "The path of innovation is long and arduous, but I believe breakthroughs are within reach." Lu's scientific aspirations emerged during junior high school through his love of mathematics. While studying at Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, he independently explored why hexagonal cellular networks are optimal for mobile base stations, rigorously proving the solution himself. After entering the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Electronics in 2006, Lu encountered signal-processing problems that traditional methods couldn't solve. He self-taught artificial intelligence, viewing it as fundamental frontier science despite its limited popularity at the time. Under Professor Jia Jiaya's mentorship, Lu completed innovative work on image smoothing technology. His code was remarkably concise — just dozens of lines with annotations — becoming a highly-cited publication. In 2015, he participated in "visual relationship detection," establishing foundations for computer vision knowledge construction. Moving to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016, Lu initially underestimated the complexity of integrating vision, cognition, and mechanical components. After nearly seven years of refinement, his team achieved remarkable results: "intelligent mechanical arms can precisely grasp nearly 1,000 objects per hour, ranging from 5-millimeter fragments to 9-centimeter spheres, even catching moving fish underwater." Lu actively recruits talented students through online forums and social platforms. He emphasizes customized mentoring and encourages innovative assignments where students tackle real research problems in small groups, fostering publication at international conferences. His laboratory exemplifies "free exploration and bold innovation." One notable collaboration involved analyzing animal behavior through machine vision — an advancement published in Nature in 2022, demonstrating AI's capacity for automatic experimental analysis. Lu encourages students with the maxim: "能者达人所不达,智者达人所未见" (The capable reach where others cannot; the wise see what others have not).<br/>---END---
